“From Infancy, You Have Known the Holy Scriptures”

I taught my kids that they could be empowered and strengthened by reading God’s word. I began reading it to them and declaring it over them when they were babies,  as my parents had done.  I believe it had the effective power to bring life and health to them, and it still does today.

Paul says to his spiritual son Timothy, ” All Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God(source) and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and   training in righteousness(purpose), so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.( result) 2 Timothy 3:16,17 Scriptures are the source for   teaching, being trained in righteousness is the purpose, being equipped for good works is the result.

The word is from God to us for training and equipping so we can do every good work .

Just before this section, Paul says “Continue in what you have learned, because you know from whom you learned it and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:14, 15

Infancy here means earliest childhood-infant. Timothy had been read the word since he was a tiny baby. By whom? Who is the the one”from whom you learned it”? In chapter 1 of the same book, Paul tells us the answer to that. “I have been reminded of your sincere faith which first resided in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice. It is clear that you too are following inthe footsteps of their godly example.” 2 Timothy 1:5

Timothy’s father was was a Greek and apparently an unbeliever( Acts 16:1) . His mother and grandmother were Jewish Christians who raised Timothy in the faith.

If you are a single mother or don’t have the help of a husband who is taking spiritual responsibility in your family, this should encourage you. With God and His word you have enough.

Timothy was Paul’s spiritual son who took over much of his ministry in Asia, leading the church in Ephesus when Paul was in prison and then later dead.

Paul is telling Timothy that hearing the word since a baby was salvation to him. This is not just salvation from sin. The Greek word for salvation  is “SOZO” which means complete divine healing, deliverance and eternal salvation.

We desire that each of our kids to be wise and experience SOZO and enjoy eternal salvation, freedom and healing.

Paul is saying that teaching them the word will help ensure these results.

As you teach your kids, it’s reassuring to know there are powerful resources at hand in the Word. Each time you read it, God Himself is speaking. Reading and listening to the revealed testimony of His nature , will and ways will shape us and our children.

“For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy, and it pierces more sharply than a two-edged sword. It will even penetrate to the core of our being where soul and spirit, bone, marrow meet. It will interpret and reveal the true thoughts and motives of our hearts.” Hebrews 4:12
