Help Your Children Grow in Wisdom

One of the greatest goals I had while raising my children was that they became wise.

Wisdom encompasses the ability to self-govern, make good decisions, and sound judgments in life.

Its definition includes showing knowledge and experience to function and succeed in stable and sensible ways. We all want these attributes.

My parenting had more to do with who my children became than what they knew. I focused on what the character they developed more than what they achieved academically, and becoming wise was paramount.

These goals greatly shaped and determined my instruction and daily routine as a parent.

The primary book I used for the foundation of all my teaching was always the Bible, and the greatest book of Wisdom in the Bible is Proverbs. I had my four children read this book in its entirety regularly, even daily.

Its author was said to be the wisest man in history. It is King Solomon, David’s son who, when asked by God for anything he wanted asked for wisdom to guide him in ruling his kingdom.

He writes in Proverbs 1 when introducing the book,

“Here are kingdom revelations to live by and words of wisdom given to empower you to reign in life. Within these sayings will be found the revelation of wisdom and the impartation of spiritual understanding. Use them as keys to unlock the treasures of true knowledge.

Those who cling to these words will receive discipline to demonstrate wisdom in every relationship and to choose what is right and just and fair.
These proverbs will give you great skill to teach the immature and make them wise, to give YOUTH the understanding of their design and destiny.”
Proverbs 1:1-4

This states that the purpose of the book of Proverbs is specifically to teach young people how to become wise, to reign in life and to give them the wisdom to guide their steps and achieve their God-given destiny and purpose. He says numerous times throughout the book that children are to listen to their father and mother, especially as they teach these principles on gaining wisdom!

What an incredible resource!

This is our highest goal as parents for our children, to grow in wisdom so that they may walk in God’s ways and ultimately be equipped to reach His destiny and purpose for them, and Proverbs helps us accomplish it!

I highly recommend that you use Proverbs to teach your children how to grow in wisdom.
