Helping our kids develop a “God consciousness”

One of the things I tried to do with my four children, was to ingrain in them that they were being watched, cared for, led, and loved by a good Father at all times; that they were never alone. That God was always with them and that He ‘knows them, cares about them , and understands them(Jeremiah 15:15).

As we discussed in our last post, there should be a reverencing and healthy fear of the Lord in our hearts, but that it is always to be completely surrounded by a sense of how much He loves us as His children.

In Psalm 139 we see David is describing a God who”knows us”and who is “familiar with all our ways”.

“Lord, you have examined me.
    You know all about me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You know my thoughts before I think them.
You know where I go and where I lie down.
You know well everything I do.
Lord, even before I say a word,
you already know what I am going to say.
You are all around me—in front and in back.
You have put your hand on me.

6 Your knowledge is amazing to me.
It is more than I can understand.

Where can I go to get away from your Spirit?
Where can I run from you?
If I go up to the skies, you are there.
If I lie down where the dead are, you are there.
If I rise with the sun in the east,
and settle in the west beyond the sea,
10 even there you would guide me.
With your right hand you would hold me.

 Psalm 139:1-10

I would have my kids read this out loud as a proclamation of truth!

As our children grow in their identity as sons and daughters of a God who is their loving Father, who is for them and with them, and who is holding onto them, they will grow in confidence and be able to govern themselves in a way that honors Him.

This Psalm also says that God made us and “wrought us together in our mother’s wombs” , He knows us better that we know ourselves.

I hope these words can help you instruct your children today to be more “God conscious” and more secure in who they are and whose they are!

Lisa
